Hospital patients can experience anxiety, uncertainty and boredom exacerbated by a radical change in living environment. Cedars-Sinai has been trying to address this problem by using virtual reality (VR) to “transport” patients away from the four walls of their hospital room and into novel, positive, and emotionally enriching experiences.

Over the past year Cedars-Sinai has studied more than 300 diverse patients using a range of virtual reality visualizations, and is now conducting a large, randomized controlled trial testing the impact of VR on pain management, opioid usage, length of stay, and satisfaction with care among hospitalized patients.

In this talk, Brennan Spiegel, MD, director of health services research at Cedars-Sinai, will discuss Cedars’ experiences using VR. He’ll address the health economic projections for developing a VR Consult Service, and whether the upfront costs of using VR are offset by downstream savings. Some of the lessons in this talk may not be surprising, but others are striking and unexpected.
